Go Back in Time

I wish I could go back in time and give my 29-year-old artistic self some advice. For one, I would say, try not to be too “judgy”.  I believe, as artists we strive to do our best, but at times, form a habit of judging ourselves too harshly. Do your best and the rest will fall into place, is the advise I would give to newly graduated art students.

This is a design for a spray bottle I created while working at Kmart World Headquarters in 1992. It’s interesting to look back and observe how some pattern trends are still popular. Trends have their place, which brings to mind Authenticity. It is important to love what you do, and in the process of experimenting —find what inspires you to “be you”— be authentic and the desire to create from your own ideas will come easier.

What advice would you wish to give to new grads?

  1. Too “judgy” is good advice. To new grads I would probably say something about not being overly anxious. If you step out and do what you want and what your passionate about what other people think shouldn’t matter.
